Abstract of the Disclosure A programmable control unit for use in small and medium size switching systems such as telephone exchanges is disclosed. The unit makes use of a special register for generating the store addresses in the memory reference instructions by means of which more than half of the register loading instructions required for the setting of the full addresses can be eliminated. The special register comprises two parts each separately addressable both for reading and writing operations so that during the per- formance of telephone-type functions, a significant spare in store capacity can be attained with respect to the required great number of transfer in- structions. A microprogrammed control block uses only a part of the outputs of the special register which comprises only operational codes. The volume of the microprogram store can be reduced significantly by suitable coding of the instructions.
