ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Herbicidal 2-alkyl glycerol derivatives having the general formula: Image wherein R represents an alkyl group of 1-6 carbon atoms; and X, Y and Z each individually represent a hydrogen atom of an alkyl or alkenyl group containing Up to 6 carbon atoms, or a benzyl group optionally substituted by one or more chlorine, fluorine or bromine atoms, or one or more alkyl groups containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or an alkanoyl group of up to 4 carbon atoms or a carbam- oyl group of the formula ANHCO- wherein A represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a phenyl group; provided that (a) at least one of X, Y and Z is a benzyl group optionally substituted by one or more chlorine, fluorine, bromine atoms and/or one or more alkyl groups containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and (b) when one of X, Y and Z is a hydrogen atom or an alkanoyl of up to 4 carbon atoms the other two are not.
