ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a semiconductor device and in particular, discloses an optically controllable, static induction thyristor, The thyristor comprises a semiconductor substrate, a pair of main electrode regions formed in at least portions of opposite main surfaces of the substrate. The main electrode regions are of high impurity density of opposite conduction types and at least a portion of the electrode on at least one of the main surfaces is a transparent gate electrode which is provided between the main electrode regions. Means is also provided for irradiating the transparent electrode with light. Thus, the static induction thyristor is controlled optically. The device is used with a photosensitive element which is connected to a large of the thyristor and a plurality of the devices are easily connected in series and/or in parallel with each other to control a large current and/or voltage.
