Abstract A novel total synthesis of 11-methyl steroids, utilizing readily available and inexpensive raw materials, is described. The procedure involves the additions of an organometallic compound and an appropriately substituted cyclopentane to an .alpha.-tetralone, with subsequent reductions to achieve the desired 11-methyl steroid. The resulting products are useful pharmacological agents possessing, for example, selective hormonal properties.
