ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved process for the manufacture of .beta.-(dimethylamino)- propionitrile by contacting acrylonitrile with dimethylamine, comprises passing the reactants in countercurrent with respect to one another in a bubble column reactor and reacting them therein at a temperature between 25 and 80°C, preferably 40 to 60°C. The product is useful as a stabilizer and as a polymerization catalyst.
