A B S T R A C T There is provided a process for preparing racemates of 2-deutero-3-fluoro-alanine and its salts by converting 3- fluoro-pyruvic acid, its hydrate or salt thereof to racemic 2- deutero-3-fluoro-alanine by reductive amination utilizing an alkali metal borodeuteride to form a salt of 2-deutero-3- fluoro-DL-alanine which is a most useful intermediate in the preparation of 2-deutero-3-fluoro-D-alanine, a potent anti- bacterial agent effective in inhibiting the growth of patho- genic bacteria of both gram positive and gram negative type.
