ABSTRACT Gelation and setting of desirably miscible and pumpable crutcher slurries of sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and sodium silicate in an aqueous medium are prevented by addition to such medium of a small propor- tion of citric acid and/or water soluble citrate. The addition of the par- ticular gelation preventive material lengthens the workable crutching time to up to four hours, from times as little as a minute or less.
