ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A printing apparatus is disclosed which is capable of printing indicia, such as letters, on articles where the rela- tive positioning of the letters as individually printed is presented in a desired format. The apparatus is adapted to determine the relative positioning between a letter printed and the next particular letter to be printed and thereby adjusts the relative position of the article to printing device to print the next letter in the proper location to give the desired relative spacing. Thus, the system printing is dependent upon letter spacing established by a predetermined scheme for spacing between particular letters. Such apparatus may be adapted for the automated hot stamping of letters into articles.
