60 SI 212 SILICONE RESIN COATING COMPOSITION ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for forming a protective coating is described. The process involves: (i) applying a first layer of a protective coating composition on the surface of a substrate, said coating composition comprising colloidal silica dispersed in an aliphatic alcohol-water solution of the partial condensate of a silanol of the formula RSi (OH)3, wherein R is selected from the group consisting of alkyl having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and aryl; (ii) removing substantially all the solvent from the coating composition on said surface of the sub- strate; (iii) applying another layer of the coating composition described in (i) on said first layer; (iv) removing substantially all the solvent from the coating composition on the surface of the substrate; and (v) curing the resultant multiple coating layers on the surface of said substrate. This produces abrasion and/or corrosion resistant coatings which are particularly useful on transparent substrates composed of synthetic organic polymer.
