ABSTRACT A process and apparatus for removing arsenic from water intended for drinking purposes in which the water is passed through a bed or column of a porous support material having impregnated thereon a sub- stantially water insoluble ferric compound. Preferably the ferric com- pound is ferric hydroxide, which is produced in situ on the support material, and the treatment is carried out at a pH of 4-8.3. Optimum removal of arsenic occurs at pH 4.4.
