The process is for the preparation of a compound of formula (I): Image (I) wherein R represents phenyl or 2- or 3-thienyl, which process comprises subjecting a compound of formula (IV): Image (IV) wherein R1 is an ester-forming radical, to the action of the enzyme .alpha.-chymotrypsin or an esterase-producing strain of Streptomyces sp.
