- 1 - ABSTRACT A catheter for insertion into a urethra and having an introducer portion for isolating the catheter from bacteria at the outer end of the passage, the intro- ducer being in the form of a sheath impervious to bacteria and having a closed end which opens on appli- cation of pressure from within the sheath to form an aperture for passage of the instrument body. This arrangement prevents bacteria being carried along the body passage by the act of inserting the catheter since the sheath is inserted only to a limited extent so that the catheter emerges from it in an area clear of bacteria.
