CONVERSION OF ASPHALTENE-CONTAINING CHARGE STOCKS AND PRODUCT SEPARATION PROCESS ABSTRACT A mixture of a hydrocarbon-selective solvent e.g. isobutane -- and deasphalted oil is separated in a two-stage hot-separator system at progressively higher temperatures and substantially the same pressure. Result- ing vaporous phases are subjected to a cold-flash separa- tion at a lower pressure and a considerably lower tempera- ture. The initial hot separation, in the two-stage system, is effected at a temperature from 0.6°C. to 14°C. above the critical temperature of the solvent; the second is con- ducted at a temperature 17°C. to 72°C. above that in the initial hot-separation. This technique is especially ad- vantageous when integrated into a catalytic slurry process for the conversion of metal- and asphaltene-containing hy- drocarbonaceous black oils.
