ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the manufacture of 1-alkyl-2-(phenoxymethyl)- 5-nitro-imidazoles of the formula I Image I wherein R1 is methyl, R2 is methylsulfonyl or ethylsulfonyl, and R3 is hydrogen, methyl or halogen, which comprises oxidising 1-methyl-2-(phenoxymethyl)-5-nitro-imidazoles of the formula II Image II wherein A is a sulfur atom or a sulfonix group (-SO-), R is methyl or ethyl, R1 methyl and R3 is hydrogen, methyl or halogen.
