ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An electronic musical instrument employs a novel technique to produce a musical sound. A major part of a musical sound producing section of the electronic musical intru- ment is constructed as a digital circuit which is well adapted for LSI fabrication. The electronic musical in- strument comprises a volume control circuit to digitally perform a volume control to increase or decrease perfor- mance volume, a period counter to count one cycle of a musical sound wave by a plurality of counting steps in order to form a musical sound wave under digital control, a period control circuit to control the period counter in accordance with the scale represented by a performance key which is depressed, and a circuit to cause the rise and fall of a musical sound wave by an amount which is an integral number of times as large as a control value of the volume control circuit, for each block of a predeter- mined number of counting steps.
