Abstract of the Disclosure An ultrasonic flaw detection system is used for inspecting circumferentially welded joints in a pipeline. The ultrasonic probes include crystals for directing and receiving longitudinal waves reflected from the pipe interior surface in order to measure the pipe thickness. A gating device is timed on the basis of the measured pipe thickness and enables the angled crystals to receive transverse ultrasonic waves from weld defects and avoids recording reflections due to weld geometry. In addition a manipulation device having a guide band positioned around the pipe and an accentric movable toward and away from the band may be used for clamping the carriage to the band.
