ABSTRACT The invention disclosed is a data transfer system which is capable of transferring data at slow speed with respect to a central processing unit and writing or reading the data into or from a magnetic disk unit at high speed. A system is known which uses two memory units and with which reading and writing are performed alternately but the present invention requires only one memory unit. In the present invention serial data enters at on bit rate and leaves at another. Each bit of incoming data is distributed into several groups and a prescribed time delay is given to the bits of each group. The bits or each group are then assembled into a group having a bit rate different from that of the incoming data.
