Abstract An in-line heater for fluid moving in a conduit has a thermally conductive and thermally massive body with a fluid passage in it. A heating element is located in the body proximate only the upstream portion of the passage. The downstream portion of the passage is in heat exchange relationship with the body but is heated substantially less by the heating element than is the upstream portion. This downstream portion of the fluid passage acts to damp cycling variations and overshoot and undershoot of the temperature of the fluid at the outlet of the heater. - 1 -
