ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for operating a vertical chamber for the continuous dry-quenching of coke by means of inert gases cir- culated through the coke and a heat-exchanger with an upper ante-chamber located under a charging aperture, a quenching chamber thereunder equipped at its lower end with a gas- inlet and a coke-outlet, and with a gas-outlet between the ante-chamber and quenching chamber, characterized in that in the event of an interruption in the discharge of coke, brought about by coke located in the ante-chamber, a part- flow of cold inert gas is introduced, the amount thereof being such that the temperature of the sum of the two part-flows fed to the heat-exchanger is equal to the temperature during uninterrupted operation, as long as this value is attainable or until this value is no longer attainable.
