Abstract of the Disclosure Pharmaceutical preparations containing 9-(2-hydroxy -3-alkyl)adenine of formula I Image (I) wherein R stands for an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, inhibit adenosine deaminase. Adenosine deaminase enzyme acts on antiviral 9-.beta.-D arabino- furonosyl derivatives of 6-amino purine to inactivate them. Provided are pharmaceutical compositions comprising a compound of formula (I) together with a compound of formula (II) Image (II) wherein R1 is hydrogen, amino, lower alkylamino or hydroxyl, together with an acceptable carrier therefor.
