ABSTRACT An improved cooling system for a magnetic isolation drive coupling is described. The coupling includes a driven magnet assembly at one end of an output shaft and which is contained in a housing hermetically sealed to a pressure vessel in which the output shaft is connectable to appropriate equipment therein. A magnetically permeable gas barrier forms part of the housing, surrounding the driven magnet assembly. A drive magnet assembly is contained in an annular housing surrounding the barrier and is connected to a prime mover so that rotation of the drive assembly effects rotation of the driven assembly through magnetic coupling. A plurality of longitudinal slots in the annular housing permit cooling air to be directed onto the gas barrier to reduce the barrier temperature rise due to eddy current heating therein at high torques and rotational speeds. With such cooling the air gap between the drive assembly and the gas barrier can be decreased to permit such high torques and rotational speeds which would, without the improved cooling feature, create unacceptable temperature rises due to eddy current heating.
