Abstract Polluting liquids spillages especially of oil and petroleum product, are removed by applying cellulose fibre material that comprises shredded and pulverised paper to the spillage, allowing the fibre to absorb the liquid, and recovering the material containing the absorbed liquid. The fibre material may be provided with improved fire-suppressing properties by wetting the paper with a fire-retardant solution before shredding and pulverising it so that the cellulosic fibres are substantially uniformly impregnated with the fire- retardant substances, and improved absorbency and a fluffy resilient texture and reduced density may be obtained by agitating the moist pulverised fibres in the presence of dry powdery drying and talcing agents, e.g. powdered magnesite.
