F.W. Herrick - 20 PROCESS FOR THE TREATMENT OF ACTIVATED SLUDGE Abstract of the Disclosure A process for the separation and removal of solids from a low solids content activated sludge from a secondary treatment system. The sludge, containing water-filled bio- logical cells, is acidified with a strong mineral acid to reduce the pH to less than 4, preferably less than 3 and is then heated at atmospheric pressure to a temperature of from 70 to 100°C, preferably 80 to 95°C, for a time necessary to rupture by hydrolysis the biological cells and release the bulk of the water therefrom while solubilizing only minor proportions of the sludge solids. The dewatered sludge is then separated from the water by filtration, flotation or other known means. - 1 -
