Case 2636 "ALIGNMENT SYSTEM WITH TARGET" ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A target apparatus for an alignment system is centered on a light beam of predetermined diameter which defines a reference line. The target apparatus has a slotted aperture therein that has a length larger than the predetermined diameter and a width smaller than the predetermined diameter. The target apparatus is centered on the beam when a major portion of the beam passes through the slotted aperture and defines two separate chord lengths of equal length along different straight edges of the slotted aperture where the edges intercept the beam. Previously a plate having a circular aperture had been experimented with as a target but that target could only be accurately aligned with a narrow light beam having well defined edges such as, for example, a light beam from a scientific laser. The present target apparatus may be accurately centered on light beams having edges that are not well defined such as, for example, light beams from a commercial laser or other suitable light sources.
