A B S T R A C T A process for the preparation of lubricating oils with high viscosity index by contacting a mixture of heavy hydrocarbons consisting at least partially of one or more foots oils (a foots oil being a mixture of oil and low- melting paraffin waxes obtained during the de-oiling of slack wax in the preparation of distillate paraffin wax) with a hydrocracking catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure and in the presence of hydrogen.
