ABSTRACT A steering gear assembly has a rotatably mounted pinion in meshed engagement with a rack of a rack bar. Longitudinal movement of the bar in response to rotation of the pinion provides a steering output. The pinion is displaceable relative to the bar along its axis of rotation and in either sense of axial direction from a neutral position. Resilient means biases the pinion to its neutral position in response to its displacement there- from. The pinion has a shaft which is rotatable therewith and extends axially thereof. The shaft is provided with flange means which extends radially relative to the axis of the shaft and is axially displaceable in unison with the pinion. The resilient means reacts against the flange means to bias the pinion.
