ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A cobalt oxide catalyst having a very low content of lead and/or calcium especially under 10 ppm of lead and under 20 ppm of calcium, and preferably containing a rare earth oxide, has a much longer life in the ammonia oxidation reaction than less pure catalysts. As a result the process can be operated at temperatures of the same order as those used when the catalyst is a platinum-rhodium alloy.
