APPARATUS FOR WASHING THE FILTER MEDIUM OF A FILTER BED Abstract of the Disclosure An apparatus is provided for washing the filter medium of a filter bed and includes an agitator having a generally vertically extending tubular member. The vertical tubular member has a first end for receiving wash water and a second end extending into the filter medium. The apparatus further includes at least two generally horizontally extending tubular members with a first group of nozzles being mounted on one of the horizontal tubular members, each nozzle in the first group being directed downwardly at a small angle from the horizontal. A second group of nozzles is mounted on the other horizontal tubular member with each nozzle in the second group being directed upwardly at a small angle from the horizontal. Wash water is supplied to the first end of the generally vertically extending tubular member. The vertical tubular member and the horizontal tubular members and both groups of nozzles are in fluid communication, whereby wash water supplied to the vertical member will cause jets of wash water to be delivered from the nozzles to the filter medium and will rotate the horizontal tubular members in a substantially horizontal plane and wash the filter medium. Means are provided for balanc- ing the vertical forces created by the jets of wash water from the nozzles. In a second embodiment, an additional pair of horizontal tubular members is provided above the filter medium with one horizontal tubular member including a first group of nozzles, each nozzle in the first group being directed down- wardly at a small angle from the horizontal, and with the other horizontal tubular member including a second group of nozzles mounted thereon with each nozzle in the second group also being directed downwardly at a small angle from the horizontal.
