C-1722 CIP (ER/MRD) OUTDOOR EPOXY SHELL BUSHING ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An electrical insulating bushing for outdoor use has a shell cast of a thermosetting resin, such as epoxy or the like, having a cylindrical conductive mesh shield embedded in an intermediate portion thereof and having means for connecting the shield to the grounded housing of an electrical apparatus. An electrical conductor extends axially through a center bore of the bushing with an annular air gap formed between the exterior surface of the conductor and the interior surface of the bushing. The embedded ground shield eliminates the need for a conductive ground coating on the exterior surface of the bushing. The differing dielectric constants of the epoxy shell and air gap provide a field grading influence to reduce the maximum voltage gradient adjacent to the embedded ground screen, thus raising the corona inception voltage level of the bushing. A thin insulation sheath is disposed around the full length of the electrical conductor in one embodiment of the invention. The novel bushing of the invention is also disclosed for use in connection with switchgear with circuit breaker drawout capability where a novel bushing combination is used in which the circuit breaker bushing has the con- struction of the present invention.
