ABSTRACT "PROCESS FOR THE SELECTIVE MONOETHERIFICATION OF PYROCATECHOL" The invention provides a process for the preparation of o-methallyloxyphenol which comprises reacting methallyl chloride with pyrocatechol in an inert atmosphere in the presence of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide or alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate, in a stirred, two-phase liquid reaction medium which comprises water and, optionally, a water-immiscible. inert organic solvent. which is liquid under the reaction conditions, in the presence of a catalyst chosen from quaternary ammonium derivatives and phosphonium derivatives, at a temperature of 50 to 140°C, optionally under pressure.
