TITLE METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MEASURING THE AMOUNT OF COMBUSTIBLES PRESENT IN THE GASEOUS BY-PRODUCTS OF A COMBUSTION PROCESS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A detector bridge circuit and a reference bridge circuit receive input signals from a regulated power source and generate output signals through feedback control circuits to a suitable readout device, such as a galvanometer. Each of the bridge circuits includes a filament exposed to the gas being measured. A detector filament coated with a catalyst is posi- tioned in the detector bridge, and a reference filament without a catalyst is positioned in the reference bridge. Initially, the bridge circuits are calibrated for operation of the exposed filaments at a preselected resistance and temperature. In the presence of a gas containing combustibles, the catalyst on the detector filament promotes combustion of the gas thereby incres- ing the temperature and resistance of the detector filament to unbalance the detector bridge and vary the magnitude of the out- put signal to the feedback control circuit. An operational amplifier of the control circuit is thus actuated at a reduced operating level to switch a transistor, connected to the power source and the input to the detector bridge, from a conductive state to a nonconductive state to thereby adjust the voltage level applied to the detector bridge. The bridge is returned to a balanced condition, and the detector filament is returned to its initial temperature. The variation in the voltage supplied to the detector bridge is proportional to the concen- tration of combustibles present in the gas. The readout of the galvanometer provides a quantitative measurement of the com- bustibles in the gas. Adjusting the voltage applied to the detector bridge maintains the detector filament at a constant temperature to increase the operating life of the detector filament and reduce evaporation of the catalyst on the filament. - 2 -
