Abstract of the Disclosure Sorting-machine for letters and the like, comprising a sorting mechanism provided with pigeon-holes, switches and photocells and an elec- tronic controlling device having a store consisting of a number of registers. As a letter moves past the photocells a code word is transferred from one register to a next one until the register corresponding to the place of destination is reached, which register ensures the correct position of the corresponding switch. Each photocell corresponds to a different register. The state of the entire sorting mechanism is simulated electronically, in which registers together with a scanning equipment and a buffer store form part of a processor, and in which the buffer store together with a number of registers connected to the processor, form control equipment for operating the switches.
