ABSTRACT. To improve the properties of a pipe coupling of the type comprising a plastics socket and a resilient sealing ring secured in the mouth of the socket, the material of at least one of the components of the coupling is irradiated, before of after moulding of the coupling is irradiated, before of after moulding of the component, with high energy radiation, in particular electrons, to induce cross linking in the material. Preferably the method of production comprises moulding a sealing ring of thermoplastic elastomer, moulding a thermoplastic socket directly on to the freshly moulded sealing ring, and irradiating the complete coupling to induce cross linking in the thermoplastic elastomer thereby to improve the compression-set properties of the sealing ring.
