ABSTRACT There is described an improvement in a regeneration process for the oxidation of coke from a spent catalyst wherein said catalyst and regeneration gas are continuously introduced into a coke oxidation zone comprising a first dense bed of catalyst and in which process coke is oxidized at oxidizing con- ditions in said first dense bed, passing the resulting catalyst and partially spent regeneration gas from the first dense bed into a CO oxidation zone comprising a second dense bed at a higher temperature than the first dense bed, regenerated catalyst is then passed to a regenerated catalyst zone at said higher tem- perature, the improvement comprising recycling a portion of the regenerated catalyst from the regenerated catalyst zone to the coke oxidation zone. Recycling a portion of hotter catalyst from the regenerated catalyst zone to the cooler catalyst in the coke oxidation zone provides a means of controlling the temperature in the coke oxidation zone and hence the rate of coke oxidation. Residual coke on regenerated catalyst is therefore significantly reduced or controlled to low levels as desired. The CO burning rate in the CO conversion zone is also increased because of the higher inlet temperature and the CO concentration in the spent regeneration gas is therefore reduced.
