60BA-56 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved rechargeable cell has a metallic casing of a conventional pre-determined cell size, such as AA, C or D. The casing contains a spirally-wound coil of positive and negative plates which occupies less than the total volume of the casing, leaving a void space in the lower portion of the casing. In a preferred embodiment, the outermost member of the spirally-wound coil is a negative plate in intimate plate in intimate contact with the metallic casing, and the positive plate is connected to a centrally-located terminal in the cover of the casing.
