ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a process for the production of 3-methyl pyridine by catalytically reacting acrolein and propionaldehyde with ammonia in the gas phase, wherein the catalysts used are highly disperse aluminium silicates which contain from 3 to 30% by weight of aluminium oxide, have a BET-surface of from 200 to 800 m2/g, a pore volume of from 0.4 to 1.0 cm3/g and a pore diameter of from 20 to 100.10-8 cm.
