ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A crude chlorine gas is purified by cooling the crude chlorine gas in the presence of water so as to crystallize chlorine in the crude chlorine gas as chlorine hydrate crystals and separating the other components of the crude chlorine gas from chlorine hydrate crystals and then, decomposing the chlorine hydrate crystals to obtain chlorine gas.
