ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION 3-Benzoyl-2-nitrophenylacetic acids, metal salts, amides and esters are disclosed having the formula: Image wherein R1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl; R2 is OH, OM, O-lower alkyl, NH2, NH-lower alkyl or N,N-dilower alkyl; X is hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, trifluoromethyl or nitro and M is a pharmaceutically acceptable cation or a fraction thereof when the cation is multivalent, hydrates thereof and n is 1-3 inclusive. The compounds have anti- inflammatory activity and methods and pharmaceutical compositions for use thereof are disclosed.
