ABSTRACT A method is described for producing alkyl esters of saturated aliphatic carboxylic acids by reacting aliphatic mono-olefines, containing double bonds, with carbon monoxide and alkanol, in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a cobalt compound and a promoter from the pyridine and/or non- ortho-substituted alkyl-pyridine group, at an increased pressure and an increased temperature, characterized in that mono-olefines having 6 to 20 C- atoms, and if necessary containing paraffins, are reacted at: a) a promoter : cobalt ratio of 3 to 2.5 : 1; b) a cobalt concentration of 0.02 to 0.2 gram- atom of cobalt per mole of mono-olefine; c) a temperature of between 165 and 195°C; d) a pressure of between 150 and 300 bars; e) a molecular alkanol : mono-olefine ratio to 1 to 10 : 1; and f) a period of residence of more than 15 minutes.
