ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Alpha-cyano esters are prepared by reacting an acyl halide with an aldehyde in a substantially water- immiscible aprotic solvent and an aqueous solution of water-soluble cyanide salt in the presence of tertiary amine or polyamine, cryptate, amphoteric surfactant, or acid salt of tertiary amine rate-promoting agent.
