ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for relieving a sealing ring of a shock absorber from over pressure. The shock absorber comprises a cylinder which is divided into two chambers by a piston which is moved by a piston rod. The lower chamber is connected by a non-return valve opening in the direction of the cylinder with a reservoir outside of the cylinder to supply damping medium to the cylinder during out-going piston rod travel. The upper cylinder chamber is closed by a cover through which the piston rod is guided and in which the piston rod packing is arranged. One or more drain channels are provided between the packing and the piston rod guide for conducting fluid leading along the piston rod guide. The drain channels open into a second reservoir which is connected to the lower chamber by way of a channel having a restriction and a non-return valve which opens in the direction of the cylinder.
