ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a new bipolar electrode and a method for the production thereof. The electrode comprises (a) an electrode frame; (b) a partition wall attached to the electrode frame and comprising a composite structure of an anode-side sheet and a cathode-side sheet; (c) an anode plate disposed on the anode-side of the partition wall; (d) a cathode plate disposed on the cathode-side of the partition wall; and (e) a plurality of electrically conductive spacer means wherein at least one spacer means is spaced between and attached to the anode-side sheet of the partition wall and the anode plate, and at least one spacer means is spaced between and attached to the cathode-side sheet of the partition wall and the cathode plate, wherein each of the electrically conductive spacer means comprises at least two elements, wherein at least one element of each spacer means is superimposed on and attached to the surface of at least one other element of the spacer means so as to align the anode plate and the cathode plate in substan- tially parallel, uniform planes, The electrode is suitable for electrolyzing various aqueous solutions such as an aqueous solution of an alkali metal chloride to produce alkali metal chlorates or alkali metal hydroxides and chlorine. This new electrode is free from the defects of the prior art electrodes which include non-uniform distribution of electric current therein, loss of voltage in the electrolztic cell, and short life of the electrodes.
