ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The presence of a particular constituent in the air such as vapours from nitro-explosives is detected by drawing air into a chamber to impinge on a membrane, e.g. a silastomer which allows organic vapours to pass while forming a barrier to normal consti- tuents of air; and conveying the vapours passing through the membrane along two flow paths to a pair of election capture detectors, the flow of the explosive vapour being delayed along one of the paths to separate, in time, the electrical signals from the two detectors, the resultant difference signal indicating whether the explosive vapour is present in the sampled air.
