Abstract of the Disclosure A method of protecting surfaces exposed to erosive environments comprising the steps of embedding a plurality of fibers into said matrix support material, eroding the matrix support material by exposing it to erosive fluid, and entrap-ping the erosive fluid between the fibers and the matrix support material so as to form a self-generating protective layer, and wherein said self-generating interface layer comprises a composite material 10 having short lengths of high- density thin fibers or whiskers 14 integrally related within the matrix support material 16. This composite 10 is then either integrally attached to the substrate 18 which is to be protected, or is itself used as a wear-resistant surface.
