ABSTRACT The cap of a bottle or other screw-top container intended to contain a carbonaceous beverage has an internal formation which serves to form a seal with a surface of the container extending about the mouth of the container, and the screw-thread ridge of the cap has one or more transverse notches in its length so as to allow gas to escape and relieve the gas pressure as the cap is removed. The radial depth of the notches may conveniently be equal to the radial height of the screw-thread ridge in which it is formed. Notches in adjoining turns of the ridge are preferably axially aligned. The screw-thread ridge of the associated container may advantageously be formed with similar transverse venting notches so as further to shorten the length of the gas escape path.
