ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Acrylonitrile copolymers which are useful for the production of flame resistant fibers can be commercially advantageously prepared by polymerizing a monomer mixture consisting of 35 - 97% by weitht of acrylonitrile, 3-50% by weight of vinyl bromide and 0-15% by weight of one or more other vinyl monomers in water as a medium at 25°-35°C. and under normal pressure in the presence of a polymerization catalyst consisting of a sulfite and a persulfate in a molar ratio of 2:1 to 14:1, preferably from 2:1 to about 9:1.
