A B S T R A C T Process for the preparation of an ester of the general formula:- Image II wherein R is an optionally substituted alkyl or cycloalkyl group and A is phenoxy, phenylthio or benzyl, which comprises reacting a benzaldehyde of the formula:- Image III with an acyl halide of the formula R.CO.Hal (wherein Hal is bromide or chloride) in the presence of water, a water-soluble cyanide, a substantially water-immiscible aprotic solvent and a phase transfer catalyst.
