ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Electrolysis of an aqueous sodium chloride solution is conducted by passing an electric current through said solution in an electrolytic cell separated into an anode chamber and a cathode chamber by a novel cation exchange membrane made of ? perfluoro- carbon polymer and having carboxylic acid groups as the ion exchange groups, said membrane having an ion exchange capacity of car- boxylic acid groups of from 0.5 to 4.0 milli-equivalents per gram of dry resin.
