Abstract of the Disclosure Effluents in a chlorine based pulp bleaching plant arc puri- fied by treatment in a bed containing a particulate, weakly basic anion ex- change and/or absorbent resin which takes up coloured lignin degradation products from the effluent. Subsequently the resin bed is eluted by means of an alkaline solution, a portion of the eluate released from the resin bed being acidified to a pH of less than about 2 to precipitate part of the solids of the effluent. The precipitate is separated from the residual acidic liquor and transferred to a recovery plant for eventual disposal. The chlorine content of the precipitate is relatively low, thereby reducing pollution and corrosion problems during the disposal.
