ABSTRACT This invention relates to a new process for the preparation of .alpha.- aminoalcohols of the general formula: Image (I) wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl group of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, and acid addi- tion salts thereof. The new process uses as its starting point compounds of the formula: Image (II) wherein R is as defined above and involves three stages as follows:- (a) react- ing the compound of formula II with an alcohol of R'OH, wherein R' is benzyl or a group: Image . in which R" and R''' are hydrogen atoms of C1-4 alkyl groups, (b) reacting the compound of formula: Image (III) wherein R and R' so produced with a p-toluenesulfonyl halide and (c) reacting the resulting p-toluenesulfonyl ester of the formula: Image (IV) with gaseous ammonia. The overall yield is approximately 75% of the theoretical.
